Football, Basketball, Baseball, Track & Field
Ron Grubbs was a member of the initial PHHS class, entering as a freshman in the fall of 1959. He excelled in all four of the major sports—football, basketball, baseball, and track, serving as co-captain of the football and basketball teams his senior year, receiving all-district recognition in both. In an era of two-way players, he starred as a defensive back and quarterback in his junior year, switching to halfback his senior year, scoring 9 touchdowns and averaging 7.8 yards per carry.
Grubbs also excelled in track, capturing the district crown in 1963 in both the 100 and 200 yard sprints, setting PHHS school records, as well as the district record in the 100 with a 9.9 time, perhaps the first high schooler in the state to run a sub-10 second 100. He also won the high jump and finished as the top individual scorer. A testament to his athletic versatility was the earning of the maximum 12 athletic letters during his time at PHHS.
Grubbs accepted a full scholarship to play football for the University of Richmond, graduating in 1967. What is more amazing, is that Ron accomplished these amazing accolades after surviving a near-fatal, accidental shooting when he was 12 years old.
He passed away on June 13, 2023.
